Problem
The task was to increase the monument's visibility and accessibility.
Our investigation into the monument's underutilisation identified three key areas for improvement:
1. Attracting more visitors.
2. Providing an enjoyable and engaging experience.
3. Encouraging repeat visits.
Solution
Attracting Visitors:
To attract visitors, we set up scale models of the monument at tourist hotspots like Utrecht Centraal, demonstrating the operation of the Sluis. We also distributed gamified souvenirs that tourists could paint, making them feel connected and integral to the project.
Other Ideas:
1. Improve Surroundings: Tidy up the monument's surroundings, enhance its appearance, and install bike stands at the site and bike rental stations at nearby bus stops to improve accessibility.
2. Audio Guides: Develop audio guides available on FM and Spotify for those who want to learn more about the monument without having to read extensively.
3. Community Events: Host community art and film screenings by independent filmmakers and artists at the monument to encourage repeat visits, while using ad spots in between to generate revenue.
